Default This should NOT be? Something is wrong?

The # 2185 was getting harder & harder to start? Took off the air cleaner & what a shock.

Something is wrong, BUT WHAT?

Nik,

Crud all over the carb
& housing wiped clean.

I have to ask, and I doubt it's a no, buutt....have you cleaned it since you got it?!!? I've never seen one that bad

Edit: Something isn't right. In your second pic, there is visible grass and debris by your carb opening indicating it's getting past the filter. Was it maybe cocked last time you installed it and it didn't seat right? Something has to be asmis if that much is getting past the filter.

Nik,
Check the rotary screen on the back of the motor. Is it missing/damaged?
Air is fed into the filter housing from the blower housing. The flywheel fan sucks the air in, then directs it across the motor for cooling, and some goes into the air filter housing. FWIW, you should probably pull all engine tins and clean the motor out. It will also be full of grass.

I'm sure you know, but make sure you get all the grass off the top of that carb opening. There is still a lot sitting there.

Its not winter so I don't think your air filter needs a coat.

The rotary screen is there & intact.

It was clean when I replaced the coils (22hrs. ago)

Got to take a closer look.

I would suspect a mouse is making a home in your blower housing by the size of the clippings, then when started the fan blows it in the air filter. Notice the grass clippings behind the head shroud also.

I don't think your breather hose is seated properly. Try gently pulling up on it. The red sealing spacer looks squished too. That's probably how it's getting past the filter. Check the grass screen and pull the tins.

Going to check that out?

I'll also take everything off, tins etc. & slowly check EVERYTHING & go from there. put everything back- make a cut & see what happens?

Gonna see if I can find another 2000 series in my area, compare it to mine & then see also?

Nik,

You haven't inadvertently connected the chute from the deck to the air intake on the air cleaner have you?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
