What's your personal foolproof, no leak, gasket sealant. I've been using Permatex high tack. Just had one leak on me.
Anyone use black RTV? |

I use old school stuff called Indian Head gasket sealer. Has never let me down yet. Most auto stores carry it.

Seems the sealing surface on my aluminum oil pan wasn't exactly flat. Thicker at the corners. Hand sanded with 120 grit on plate glass for an hour to get it relatively flat.
Dry? Well, I'll give that a try. What torque on the bolts? I used 176 in-lbs. Threads were clean and lubricated. Ran a bottoming tap in the block and new grade 5 bolts. |

Common sense tight. Or about 20ftlbs. 25 maybe. I'm sure it's in the book.

I put mine on dry to. Torqued to 30ft lbs I've pulled them to look inside and inspect and reused the old gasket and used some black gasket sealer, just a thin coat.

I've been using a very thin coat of black rtv on both sides of the gasket. Kind of the "belt and suspenders" approach. No leaks.

in My opinion RTV is a poor choice of sealant. most people get carried away with it. once you've seen damage from RTV you would understand what a poor choice it is. you also need to make sure there is no oil on the parts or you'll probably have a leak. Hi tack & copper coat isn't to bad if you have to glue something in place. Loctite gasket eliminator is pretty good stuff but its not for use with a gasket. putting these engines together isn't rocket science so KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) applies

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
