Default 982 & #2 Tiller?

I've read thru some of the threads and know that the proper tiller is the one that runs off the rear pto and uses the 3pt. It seems that the availability and pricing of that equipment makes it pretty unreasonable. From what I've read, I'll need to figure out a way to lower the #2 tiller since the 982 sits higher and I'll need to figure out what size belt will work. I really like the 982 and I'd like to put it to work tilling the garden and blowing snow. I got info on a Berco blower to fit and am keeping my eyes open for a 450, but the tiller is the real issue. And, I'm not really interested in a self-powered unit with a 3pt or sleeve hitch. Any feedback or suggestions would be great.

If it were me I'd use a piece of 1/4 to 3/8 plate and create a new rear cover that was 2" or so longer, that would alow me to mount the tiller mount lower.

That's gonna take a long belt, NAPA has'm. You'll need to modifly a mule drive for it too.

I had one and IIRR that belt was 1/2, you'll need a 5/8 pulley on your right angle box. You may be looking at $80-90 for a belt, 5/8X????120"?

Thanks for the info Scott. Still a few unknowns. The 982 doesn't have a sleeve hitch listed for it. Will a wide frame 3pt casting, lift rod and lift block work on a 982? (I'm assuming so, and all three will be necessary for the #2 to be mounted) Never installing a CC tiller before, (ie: not speaking from experience), would it be possible to leave the right angle gear box mounted normally to the rear and then lower the mounting points for the tiller the 2"? That would entail a longer belt from PTO to RA gear box plus a longer belt between the gear box and tiller, but wouldn't have to mess with the mule?

I checked pricing on the parts I need and it's going to be around $7-800 plus my fabrication.

Tiller - $350
3pt casting - $90
3pt casting rod - $14
3pt lift block - $21
Lift pin - $20
Lift link - $60
Belts - $90-120
Pulley (5/8")- $60

Seems a little steep?

Just closed the deal on a good condition, complete 450 blower! :biggrin2.gif: I should have it by the end of the month. Still have a line on a #2 tiller, but not sure about "making it work". It's relatively local, so I may go take a look at it on Saturday.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
