Default Red Cub 184 Lo-Boy

I was stumbling around the net and run into the 184 Lo-Boy (77-80). IH used the 'big tractor look' on the lo-boy 2 years ahead of the 82's (1979 - 1985).

It is only 18hp but weighs in at 1620lbs. It would be awesome with a set of ag's on the back and tri-ribs on the front. The images I found had turf tires and mowers. Nor did I notice any evidence of hydraulic ports on the front or rear.

There is at least one company making fiberglass grills and grill shells. It seems this tractor has become desirable and people are modifying other cubs (185 maybe) to look like it.

Looking is free.

The place my cousin works has a 184 like the one pictured, it has a spun bearing and instead of fixing it correctly the just keep putting a new bearing in it every couple months. Its a real shame to because its in like new condition otherwise.

The yellow and white paint scheme like our CC's is definitely out there. I'm not sure what the cutoff is for the paint schemes but my dad has 3 lo-boy's; one red and two yellow and white.

I suppose I could have used this for a title.

Cub Lo-Boy 184, a late 70's tractor that only came in Red.

But that is not what I wanted to say. I was trying to point the 184 out as an example of IH's use of 'big tractor' styling and color prior to the 82's. When people see 'Red Cub Cadet' the big tractor styling comes to mind, that it is my logic behind using 'Red Cub'.

I like the proportions of this tractor.

I should have said.......I never seen a 184 in any other color than red.

I do realize previous Cubs could be either red or yellow & white.

The Farmall Cub came in red. (Ok, well they came in "Construction Orange" too for highway department use.) The Farmall Cub Lo-Boy could be red, or yellow/white. The 154 and 185 only came in yellow/white. The 184 came in only red.

It the same as a 154/185 Cub Lo-Boy.... just with different grille and painted red. You've never seen one? They are quite a bit bigger than a SGT. If I have time later, maybe I can get a pic of the two side by side. (Like maybe tonight. I'm not moving stuff around right now just for a pic )

To the OP:
The 154/185/4 's did not come with auxiliary hydraulics. You could get them with 3PH and rear PTO, a diverter valve that separated the mid/front lift from the 3PH, but no remotes. I've seen them with the fat rear Ags, but they don't make a tri-rib for the fat front tires. The rear Ags in that size are outrageous in price. The skinny ags and tri-rib fronts are common, but you seldom see the 184 with that combo. I'm not sure why....
I've never seen anyone modifying their non 184 Lo-Boys to look like it. I'm not sure other than from a collector standpoint that they have become "desireable", but they do seem to be holding their value. It's a up a little from years past. For a while, you couldn't sell one if you wanted to. Seems like they are going for around $2K on average now.

I am not looking to buy one but I found this at tractorhouse for $5400 with skinny ag tires like J-Mech mentioned. I have seen a few in the $4000 range. But $2000 does sound like a more realistic price.

Yeah, I've seen them up there on price too. They usually just sit.

I have a 185 and a 154. 154 is not in running condition. My 185 has 3pt, rear PTO and now skinny tires. (Swapped tires between the two machines) I like it.

Here's the thread on it if you interested:

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
