A couple weeks ago , I got on here to ask what new tractor I should buy and you guys steered me away from a new tractor all together. Thank you!
No, I haven't made a purchase yet, mainly because my work schedule hasn't aloud me to take a road trip yet and most of the tractors I want to look at are at least a 2 hour one way, some even further. I have however, done a ton of research since last speaking with you guys and I have narrowed my search based on that and your recommendations. So that being said, Ive decided I'm going to buy an 1864 or a 2182. I've found several candidates of each model in various levels of condition and price. Knowing that all I really want to do is mow grass and possible push or blow a little snow, if you could only have one model, which of these two would it be and why? Id love to hear all the pros and cons of each model and know why one would be better suited for me than the other. I do realize that people may be partial and that's fine, just tell me why your partial. Important factors for me would be the ability to mow well, reliability, availability of parts and be somewhat easy to work on. Thank you ahead of time for any replies. By the way, Ive been all over this site the last couple weeks and this is a really cool place. My wife isn't really liking it since Im already showing her pics and talking about future projects, lol. |

Turning radius and cost of maintenance would be the deciding factors for me. If you have a lot trees or obstacles to mow around, I think the GT (1864) would be the one for you. I mow a Christmas tree field with mine. The 2182 is water cooled and going to be a little pricier to maintain, but would be better for large wide open areas. Both are great tractors!

Also a quick question. While researching the 1864, I noticed dual hydraulics as an option. What advantages are the added hydraulics? I noticed the blowers are belt driven so the hydraulics would only run the chute? I can deal with manually cranking the chute if I get a blower but what other advantages would a dual hydraulic have? Sorry if these are dumb questions. Im really tying to learn as much as I can.

The only factory accessory for the front outlets is a power angle blade that I know of. Front outlets could be added to any tractor with hydro lift.

Time to poke the bee's nest.
1864 = K.O.H.L.E.R. Keep On High Lookout for Engine Replacement. 2182 = Kubota powered, liquid cooled, pressurized oil lubrication, alternator, last forever, smooth, quiet, dependable. Let the arguing begin!!! I apologize in advance

![]() ![]() ![]() Kubota's are good engines. One of the best. But, so are Kohlers. Maybe you just owned KT's or something. All depends on what you want. If you have a big yard, room, and you want stuff like 3PH, rear implements, plenty of power..... the SGT is the way to go. If your just looking for an awesome grass killer, and the ability for a front blade or snow blower.... maybe tug a cart, aerator, lawn sweeper.... the the GT is the way to go. Personally..... I say get both! ![]() ![]()

Why not post some links to the tractors you are considering, it may help with determining the best value rather than engaging in a purely hypothetical discussion. There also plenty of folks here with great experience that can spot issues just by looking at a picture.

How many acres do you have to mow?

When I actually get time to go, I'll post links a few days early and get opinions. I don't wanna post something now that may not be available and new stuff is getting posted everyday.
I live on 14 acres. Best guess is I mow 2 acres or less of it. |

As most of you know I'm all about the Kubota powered Cyclops, 1782 and 2182. That said the 1864 is probably one of the all time best GT's that Cub ever made. Same pump and rear as the Supers short of the reduction gearing. Same hydraulics, same power steering. The CH18 is a very good engine and it's easy to service. The Supers are more prone to having problems with breaking transmission mounts than the GT's because of the torsional stress caused by the longer frame. That's something that can be dealt with by adding the SGT brace kit from Xtreme. I guess if I was just getting into Cubs and the application was to mow a couple acres and maybe move some snow, I'd look for an 1864 with a 54" mower and enjoy life. Now if your 6'6" + tall you may like the Super just for the extra leg room. You may want to also consider the 2284, it's also right at the top of the list.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
