In both generations of the 1641, the transmissions were made by Hydro Gear.

Oh my. Thanks for the info. Might Dextron III be OK?

I downloaded a Hydro Gear manual, perhaps not correct, but manual says "engine oil."

Yes. It will be fine. I will say, I ran it for a while and ended up changing it out. I think it's a little too light of oil. In the winter when plowing snow (and using the lift) I thought it whined a lot more. May have just been my imagination.... No damage will occur, but I switched back to a hy-tran oil (Not IH Hy-Tran, just a hydraulic trans oil.)

I have Dex VI in my 782 and it seems to be the quietest hydro I have. Maybe it's a coinkydink, point is it won't hurt anything.

Thanks J-Mech and all.

Guess I've never heard of Hydro Gear before now.

The manual I downloaded from their website.

My library is growing rapidly. I purchased a number of heavy duty plastic envelopes some time ago. Clear plastic. I use a staple gun to pin 'em to the workshop wall, print and put papers in them with the cover showing.

Put the Cub manual in one, cover front 'n center, attention! Huh!.

There I go again, once a Jarhead, always a Jarhead.

Just my 2 cents on the ATF oil deal. I had one hydro gear pump that was given to me a couple years ago, it was supposed to be bad. The PO had filled the trans with ATF. Took it apart and it had globs of stuff that looked like pink Crisco all over the insides. My guess is the ATF and the Hy-Tran didn't like each other. If it was my tractor I'd play it safe and stick with Hy-Tran or something that is compatible with Hy-Tran unless you have the rear torn down and totally cleaned out.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
