Is anyone into collecting old license plates? … or a member of the ALPCA (Automobile License Plate Collectors Association)?
I just joined the ALPCA, but my interest in plates started around 20 yrs ago when I first built my garage. I answered an ad in the local paper for a farmer’s sale, and bought a huge box of plates from him. I thought they’d look good hanging on the garage walls, along with some old wooden handled tools. In the box, there ended up being plates from 35 of the US states, along with many other old plates. I hung them at the top of the garage wall, side by side, and they went about 3/4 of the way around the garage. After that, I didn’t make much effort to acquire more for a while. So last fall, I decided to get busy and get the rest of the US states and go the rest of the way around the garage. After some searching and trading, I finally got all of the states, and even some from Germany, Ireland, and Canada. It took 95 to go all the way around the top border of the garage walls. I’m still trying to upgrade some of my state plates with better or older examples, and maybe get some old porcelain ones. If anyone else here is into old plates, let me know, and maybe we can start posting some pics of interesting old plates, or trading. I’ve seen some decent ornamental plates too, with IH or Cub Cadet on them. Here are a few pics. I don’t have anything extremely rare or expensive, but they’re interesting in their own way. I like some of the older ones with state slogans. Josh [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]

I've got probably 15 old plates. Bought them from my great grandpas farm sale after he passed away. One set of them were off his old IH pickup truck.

I have 2 I had on a car in '76, and it is now registered to my classic Argosy motor home. Still haven't found a car I want to put my 1918 Michigan plate on, but haven't given up.

I've thought about collecting some old plates. Very interested in the real old ones, as seen on the pickers show, I think some of them were leather.
That's a cool collection Josh BTW '76 was a good year, just sayin

Does that mean that you're about 38 or 9 years old?

Thanks guys, for the comments, and for posting the pics. Glad to see some interest. I’ll post a few more pics of some of my more interesting older ones.
Zippy, the garage and wall paint are 20 yrs old. Built in 1994. I used good exterior paint for the interior walls, in silver pearl – a light grey that doesn’t show the dirt much. I wipe the walls down once in a while, not very often. As you can see, the paint has held up well. Yes, I have the Michigan bicentennial one too, and a couple of other states. Many states had special red/white/blue plates in ’76, or some form of a bicentennial plate. I like them. Most of the very old ones are porcelain, and they command the largest prices. I think there were some old fiberboard style plates in some areas. Old license plates have a similar appeal to me as old coins, by having a date & location. When I look at one, I always wonder where it has been, who has owned it, seen it, etc. Josh This one could look good on a Cub Cadet. Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
