Default Need advice on next purchace

I currently have a cub 125 that I bought for my son that has been awesome, we have a great time pushing snow and just using it, we bought it for a restore project but my son doesn't want me to tear it apart now, so I have decided to buy another one to restore, and I would like to get a manual since we already have a hydro, locally I have found a 70, 71, and a 1200 which of these would be the best option, I have read about the clutch and isolator issues with the 1200 but i do like the fact it is 12hp.

Buy another 125 I have two now. I had a 122 and a 125 previously. The gear drive was loaded with options but I liked the 125 better.

I traded the 122 for a 125 with hydraulic lift and couldn't be happier

If you get the 1200, I make solid mounts that bolt in place.

The best advice that I could give you, if your son likes cubs and it is going to be a father-son project to restore it, is to ask him on which one he wants. You might also look at what parts/extras are included with each. You can run up a bill if you are paying shipping on all kinds of parts that might be missing from any one of the models. The parts between the 70 and 71 model will interchange, so if you acquired both then you would be able to swap parts if needed. Some of the extras can get pricey, like lights/light switches, correct seat, spring assist, 3 point hitch, attachments, etc... Those can all be factors in the deal and I am sure that I missed several, so others can chime in and help you further.

Knowing that you are going to have the 125 apart in teh future, sticking with the same model does make parts easier (by another 125 to restore, plus a 125 parts machine that the two of you can rob as needed).

Then you have a father/son matching set....

I thought about another 125, but older cubs just don't come around often here, there is a 129 that just posted, I know it's a wide frame, but how does it compare to our 125?

I'd go with the 70 or 71 especially if one of them has the round fenders. The 129 is a nice machine and the wide frames ride nice and are easy to work on since there's a little more room.

Neither the 70 or 71 have fenders, and the 71 does not run, and the owner doesn't know why.
Does the 129 have the same hydro as a 125?

Yes, as far as I know there no real difference.

Hydros and gear drives are two different animals, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Differences in HP and options make up huge differences in these tractors.

I think to get the best advice from the guys here, it would be best to tell everyone what kinds of things you want to do with the tractors.

However, all things considered, if you buy an old Cub Cadet (any model) and spend time working on it with your son, how can you loose?

When you get it finished, another one will come along in short order (they always do).

Yes, the transmissions and rear ends are the same 125 and 129.

Thanks, whatever I end up with will be used for some snow removal and pulling a aerator and cart. I have hopes of someday getting to attend a plow day, but I don't know if that will happen.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
