Have a smallish oil leak at the PTO end of the engine and need to replace the seal. Also have oily residue in/around the air filter.
I realize that the front and back oil seals are different. Can't remember where, but had read somewhere about there being (2) different replacement oil seals for the front seal; one being too loose. Is this true or not? Here's what I have for seals and breather numbers: Front Oil Seal # 52-032-07 Rear Oil Seal # X-583-5 Breather # 52 035 02-S Can anyone confirm these numbers or is there a listing I missed somewhere? Thanks! Stanton

Thanks everyone.
The engine is a Kohler KT17 #24302 (can't read the serial number next to it). I have a new oil seal (PTO end) #X-583-5. Could someone step me through the PTO removal process? I removed the hood/front end and top shielding. It looks like the muffler would need to come off in order to get to the two nuts above the PTO, then there's two bolts at each bottom corner. Does the engine need to be removed or can the PTO be removed and seal replaced with engine still on frame? Never done this before, so just wanted a little guidance. Thanks.

Carefully drill a small hole in the face of the seal. Install a "sheet metal" screw just enough to get a "bite". Then pull on the head of the screw until the seal comes out.

The muffler nuts/clamps are pretty well corroded. Will probably have to cut the clamps off and replace with new. Will see.

Was able to remove the muffler w/o any damage. The PTO had me stumped for a little while, but it finally came off.
The existing oil seal was installed on an angle, or as my grandpa would say, "Not true to the world." Drilled the holes, inserted the screws, and pulled it out. Cleaned up the face of the engine, inspected and found no noticeable grooves or wear to the shaft. Lightly oiled the shaft, put some sealant around the outside of the new seal and inserted it w/ a 2" PVC pipe to a different spot on the shaft. No problems. Cleaned and re-installed the PTO. Have a new breather assembly on order and want to replace it before starting the engine. The old breather had the metal flap, but it was entirely broken off. Thought that this might be the source of some surging lately. Anyway, want to thank all for their comments and help. Especially to jimbob200521's "How to: Replace PTO side crank seal on a Kohler Command" in the Technical Library; great resource. I'll post when the breather is installed and everything's back up and running.

I'll put this thread to bed.
Installed the new crankcase breather Saturday (old one was discovered to have a broken metal valve flapper). Fired it up and she ran very smooth; no surging or hunting by the governor. Ran it for quite some time and also cleaned up last year's oily residue on the mule drive (from front seal leak), and greased the spindle deck bearings. At that point, everything's running so good, I drive to the back yard and notice the grass over the lateral field needs some attention. Mowed the whole back yard. Continued to run great. Parked and stopped mower with no sign of oil from the replaced seal.Think this one is done. Thanks to all who commented and helped.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
