Seems as if the idler arm tension spring has lost some sprung?
Or, perhaps just a new belt'll do the trick? The tension / idler arm, jumps in my opinion just a bit much. This deck sat outdoors for 'bout a year. Belt looks good and I loaded it with CRC belt conditioner. Deck is in excellent condition after lots of wo....wo....work. Is it possible the belt length grew while unused outdoors; snow, ice, rain, sun, dark nights, gloomy days? A ride to TSC, Huskee Kevlar belt(s), seems to be in order. I find it obsene that one would leave a piece of equipment outdoors regardless. This Cub has a place, forever, in my barn. Poor Cubbie suffered enough! ![]()

Put a new belt on it and clean the rust out of the pulley grooves.

Those idler arms have been known to freeze up on the pivot and won't move if left to the elements. There's no grease fitting so you have to take it apart, clean it, lube and put it back together.

All cleaned up and a new belt, Huskee Kevlar 1/2" x 107". I did grease again and the idler arm does have a grease fitting. 48" SD deck (Model #317).
Working so far now if the grass'll just get over winter. None of us like this cold, wet, white stuff. Grandsons love plowing, I'de rather smell freshly mowed grass.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
