I am rebuilding the deck off my 782D and was wondering if anyone has put a smaller pulley on the center spindle to speed up the tip speed? Do I need to replace both the pulleys or can I get the top one off by itself? I have seen this done on the 44 inch decks but not with the 5/8" belt. Any help is much appreciated!

IF.........one wanted to get more "tip speed", it would require custom engineering and fabrication.

i did this to my 50" deck....it does have a stack pulley..i cut the old one off, bought a wdldable 4.5" pulley, turned the center out on a lathe until it was the same as the cylinder(spacer) and then fried it together...works great...i can take some pics if you want them...definitely get better blade speed...

Back in the IH days they made a speed up pulley for the 44 & 50 decks. It was for the narrower 3V belts and took care of the cutting issues this deck had leaving swirl marks when turning. The only issue was that they did not make a shorter belt and it was at the end of adjustment when new. I had to purchase an aftermarket belt, but worked fine. I am not aware of a "speed up" pulley for the later "B" section 5/8" belt as used on the 50C. I had issues with a Haban 60" on a 2082 not mowing well so I went to a larger pulley on the engine clutch to solve the issue. I had to rivet a larger pulley from a later model on the clutch shoe and install a longer belt. If you go too small of pulley on the mower it will burn belts due to the lack of surface gripping area and it is hard to wrap a large belt around a small pulley and keep it tight. You are better off installing a larger pulley on the engine clutch.

I actually do, my dad has a 50C that he had under his diesel. That shell is pretty much rotten so I access to whatever I may need. Where did you find the pulley, and what size did you go with?

i got the weld "a" pulley at the case ih dealer down the street.. i think its a 4" or may be a 4.5" but i think its a 4" i will check when i get it down... i would think that any farm and barn store would carry them...i used a hole saw to cut the original stack pulley apart..from the top...it was just bigger than the "spacer" in between the 2 pulleys... does that make sense??

That makes sense! I think I am going to run a 4.5 inch pulley just for the safety and longevity of the bearings. I hate to have to put bearings in every few years.

lack of lube/power washing/string/wire wound around the lower spindle cutting out the seals. When replacing a seal I find it is advisable to install the upper seal with lip facing out/up so when greasing them with a grease gun, you don't force the seal out of it's housing, ruining them. The grease will just expel around the upper seal. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
