Default Is a Cub Cadet 1650 worth $400?

Can buy this for $400, but don't know much about this model. It's got a 16hp v twin and hydrostatic deck and transmission.

To me, if the mower deck wasn't rusted out and no weird noises from the deck bearings, if the tires were in good shape; the transmission works, ie it goes forward and back without a problem, noises or funny smells; and the engine runs and doesn't blow lots of smoke (burning oil) I would readily pay $400.

I then would put another $150 into it and lube all the grease fittings, change the HyTran and filter, change engine oil and filter if it has one, air and gas filter, and spark plug.

What would a Hytran fluid and filter change cost me? I actually think I might be able to get this mower for $300. I drove it around his yard with no unusal noises?

The tractor was repowered with a different engine.... so the engine is not an original. Originally a single cylinder K341AQS Kohler. If originality of the 1650 isn't a serious issue for you, then at least consider the workmanship quality as far as the tractor had been modified for a different motor.

I wasn't sure of that engine either. Anyway, Hy-Tran isn't cheap if you buy it by the quart. I think it was $8/qt last time I checked and you need 7 quarts. CaseIH dealers sell it by the 5 gallon pails for a lot less per quart, which makes sense if you have a few Cub Cadets.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
