Just picked up 1972 IH Cub Cadet 149 with 14 hp K321. Garage kept and has sat for 10 years. I love k series because they seem easy to work on and are dependable.
Here's the problem............. I get power to the coil and to the points but no spark at the spark plug and no spark in the points. New points, new condenser and have tried 3 different coils. Alternator/ Generator also good. Any help for me? I have a k301 in a ford LGT 125 and I've never encountered feeling so brain dead. |

Run some fine sandpaper between the points contacts. I've had new points that did not work until I did this. I now do this on every set I install.

Test light should be lit on positive side of coil with key on and also in start position. Test light on negative side of coil should "flash" during start. As stated above, probably have to clean new points as they sometimes have coating on them.
Also, I see it's your first post, Welcome to OCC

Test for continuity through the closed points. I had a similar problem on a 12-horse. I tested every thing but through the points, never thinking the contact surfaces were non-conducting. That was my problem. Cleaned them and it started right up.
Sand over or file over the points contact buttons. |

Another vote for cleaning the points.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
