Default 1641 Engine Swap?

Will a kohler 18hp from a 1864 work in my 1641? If so, any problems I should know about? Thanks

Short answer is yes. May I ask why?

I understand the question why. I would much rather have the 1864, however there is only an engine that came out of a 1864 for sale. I got the 1641 for nothing. The original briggs had a hole in the block so the P.O. put in a kohler ch16 in it. He had to raise it up so the oil filter would clear the frame. It appears that it is on it's last leg. I see there is the 1864 18hp engine for sale locally. The 48" deck on this cuts nice and since I got it for free if I can get the 18hp for a good price and it will go in without any major problems maybe I will hold onto it. Thanks Rick

OK, you'll need the drive shaft from the 1864, the muffler, the spacers that go under the engine, the PTO and there are a couple differences in the wiring.

I just completed the reverse of this yesterday. I put a 16 hp Vanguard in an 1864 tractor.

I pulled the 16 out of one tractor, complete from mounting plate to muffler to air cleaner and bolted it in. I also swapped in the wiring harness from the 16 along with the driveshaft. The 16 uses a remote starter relay, the 18 does not so if you don't like wiring problems, get the 16 wiring assembly complete.

The heat shield between the dash tower and the engine is different between the two engines as well.

I used the 18 choke/throttle cables on the 16 as well. They're not exactly the correct length but they work. I don't know if they will work in reverse.

I've been collecting parts for this combo for quite some time, just to have a tractor like this one.

The easiest way to do this is buy a complete crapped out donor tractor so you have all the parts there rather than try to piecemeal it together.

PS. A couple of years ago, I did it the other way. I stripped everything off a very rusty 1864 and put all the good stuff on a nice 1641 tractor. The key here is having all the right parts gathered to complete the swap.

What kind of condition is the 1864 in? If it is in good condition, then use it. The 1864 is a better machine, IMO, than the 1641.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
