Default 982 Restoration - Progress report

Hey All,
I wanted to let you all know how things were going. The 982 is now safely home. I ended up putting a new battery into the 982 and I was able to get it to start. It runs however it is very rough. After a little investigating I realize I am getting no exhaust from the right side exhaust. I figure I either have a seized cylinder or a stuck valve or something along those lines. I am a complete newbie at this stuff and I'm honestly a little nervous about doing a rebuild but I'm looking forward to it. Any advice on what I should be looking for as I start this process would be useful. It's a Onan B48G I believe. I am starting to look up what parts I might need and found some links to another forum on this site for doing onan rebuilds which is quite useful.

On another note I recently got new headlights for the 982. I installed then and a new ignition switch. The switch works great the light not so much. I'm not sure what's going on with it but the lights won't turn on. the Voltmeter shows 12V but it's not steady. Any thoughts on why I would not get lights?

Here are some recent Pics to share:

first thing i would check is compression, both sides should be about equal. second thing is to check for spark at dead cylinder,if you have spark swap plugs side to side and see if that solves the issue. if so,time for new plugs, which i would replace anyhow. if you have no spark on one side,i suspect the coil is bad. onans are known for carb floats deteriorating as well.Roger

I just ordered the compression tester from Amazon. I'll update once I get that in. In the mean time I went ahead and replaced the spark plugs with brand new platinum plugs. I switched the spark plug cables and have seen no difference in the behavior of the engine. The left side blows hot exhaust and the right side blows cool exhaust. I have even gone as far and put seafoam in the engine just to see if it would make a difference. So far nothing.

Default Update

I received my compression test tool and a new dip stick for my engine. (It came without a Dip stick). before I did a compression test I figured I would take a look at what the oil looks like. Well the oil is BAD! It is super runny and it smells of gas. I am assuming I has a busted seal on the piston. I'll run the pressure test and let you all know the results.

Before you assume busted seal on the piston, check your fuel pump. I know on the Kohler's of the same time they were a mechanical pump run off the camshaft and when they'd go bad they'd leak fuel into the oil. Another thing to check is the carb. If it's got a bad needle or seat it can flood the engine like that. I would bet money it's not a bad piston seal, want my paypal address?

Give that a shot and I'm sure others will be along shortly to mention other things to check

I've had trouble with the carb on my 982 leaking fuel/flooding the engine. There are at least 2 different carbs used, know which one you have before ordering parts. Read up on Onan engines in the engine section. Parts are pricey, and not the most common items to find aftermarket. A lot of folks repower with something else. I'm still stubborn enough to try to work all the bugs out of mine. I will admit it has a lot of power and sounds a lot meaner than a Kohler.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll take a look at it too. However I ran the Pressure test seeing as I had a tool I hadn't gotten to use yet! . So after running the test I got these test results.

Cylinder 1: 120 PSI
Cylinder 2: 0 PSI

Yes you read that right.. 0

I couldn't believe it so I ran it twice on both Cylinders. Same results. I' pretty sure I have an issue on the right side Cylinder. I'll blow some air in there and see if I can hear where the leak is coming from.. or I may just upen up the cylinder head and see whats up.

I know I could possibly just repower it, but I will say this about the Onan. it's running as is on one cylinder and it runs circles around my crappy little Craftsman mower. I can tell the thing is going to be very powerful once it have the engine right. Besides I thing it will be worth more in the long run with a completely original engine and what not.

Hey Guys!.. ok so here is the latest. I went ahead and opened up the "bad head" It's very crusty take a look at the pictures.

So I went ahead and turned over the engine to see what was happening. well the Piston is frozen.. it's not moving anywhere. I also noticed oil was coming in on the intake port (small port) See Picture.

I'll be dismounting the engine from the frame this weekend and see what's going on the underside. I'm guessing the Connecting Rod is blown! kinda like this guy. if that's all it is I'd be happy! because the Bore looks good and not scratched up. I may just need a new piston, rings and connecting rod.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
