The KT17 engine in my cub cadet 782 international is notorious for burning through oil. I switched to using Rotella 15-40, it is still burning oil. I was wondering if anyone had used or preferred to use the Rotella synthetic blend, or full synthetic. I change the oil quite often because I want to prolong its life and wondered if the synthetic would assist with burn off or if I would just be wasting money. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Wasting money. Only think that keeps a motor from burning oil is rebuilding it. No oil or additive will change that.

Hey, when I was a kid I had a car that burned oil and had next to nothing for oil pressure, I put 85W140 in it and sold it. Never heard any complaints.

I would suggest using 30 Weight and keeping it full.
Give it a little chance to warm up in winter before loading it fully and enjoy it. When it finally gives up or you do, replace it with an M-18 or a re-power of your choice. |

Maybe sort of. All I remember was it needed to be warmed up before the buyer showed up. That was a one and only time I ever pulled anything like that. As far as I know the buyer ran it for a couple more years. Think it was about a $200.00 car. I was about 17 at the time.

Reed,
I've had better luck with SAE 30 or SAE 40 in worn engines air cooled and water cooled. Unfortunately most KT 17's burned oil even when they were new. My opinion on synthetics... if you change it often they are not worth the money... if you are going to neglect it then maybe so.. That engine was designed for SAE 30. A quart or two of oil is a lot cheaper than another engine or a rebuild. Jay

Thank you for the input/entertainment everyone. I have a local IH dealer that still sells the low ash 30 wt. I will pick some up this week and start using it. I do use my cub year round so I will be sure to let it warm up.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
