Default 682 blew up

Last Night my dads 682 with a series one kohler motor blew up while mowing. We have not dug into it yet but its only seems to be running on one cylinder. Its in too good of shape to part out. I was wondering what would be an affordable repower for it? What have people repowered them with?

You can slide in a Kohler M-18 (Cub Cadet spec'd) real easy with some minor electrical modifications..

If you look around for an M-18, take a peek at some of those older dark gray early 90's sears GT 6000's, they were used in "some" of them too. That's where I found mine for my 582 Special.

A lot of people have swapped the Kohler CH 18 Command series OHV engines into the 82 series tractors. That is what I'm planning to do with my 782 when the series 1 KT17 dies.

I found some 18 CH motors for sale and was wondering if that was a possible repower option. Could you also repower with a Vanguard that would be like in a 2165 cub. How much modification would be needed for these repower option and could you run a mower deck with them?

CH18 would almost be a bolt in. It was the engine used in the 1863 and 1864 and they are pretty much the same tractor as the 782 and 682. The Vanguard will also play because they used the Vanny in the 1440 and 1641. Again pretty much the same as the 782 and 682. I did a 16 Vanguard into a 1210. I used 1641 parts, muffler, motor plate and drive shaft. You will need a pump adapter for the CV style shaft, Jeff in Pa can make one for you.

Hey thanks for all the help. The reason I asked is there's an antique tractor show in my neck of the woods at the flea market there are some CH 18 motors for sale. What would be a reasonable price to pay for these motor. There was a 2185 and the guy wanted $450 for it. I am planning on going back tomorrow because I saw some other cubs I am interested.

What's a reasonable price " all depends on condition, hours and how bad you need it"

I have a good one setting on the shelf now that I paid $50 for. A couple of years ago, I bought a complete 2185 with a good CH18 in it for $100.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
