Default 1200 with K301 timing problem

Hello guys, I need some help on this timing. My motor has about 10 hours on it,
and it has an occasional miss/sputter out of the exhaust, Just about everything
on it is new, and I have gone back and rechecked plug, wire, condensor, coil
Carb is good. I picked up a Genuine Kohler points & condensor. I've been reading Jonathon's tutorial here on the forum for setting the gap & timing.
What I have found is that my points are open when the T is centered in the window, not the S. The engine builder has the gap set at .014, not .020

Not sure what to make of this. Is it possible that the timing is off that much and yet the motor still runs pretty darn good, except for that occasional miss?

Could the Camshaft/Crank alignment be a tooth off possibly?

Very confused.

You need to set the "S" in the window and adjust the points to just crack open. I think your timing is just set incorrectly.

HEy Dave,

you want to identify when the points start to open.

If everything is hooked up I like the test light method because it's easy to see and you don't have to disconnect anything.

Made a test light very easily with an extra bulb from a 2 pack of taillights.

Did you use a meter or light?

Hello Tim, I've got a decent Test light, Ice Pick Style- alligator clip.
Its been incredibly hot 104 today, I'm going to give it another look next week,
Figure out how to get the 1200 in My house where its cool!!
I can see the points as they just begin to open, bit the S is not in the window
I think I understand the process, just confused with the T and the S

I hear you, hot here too.

Good weather to take a break and hit it fresh later. Take your time and you'll figure it out. I re-read Jonathan and MAtt G's tutorials several times before I got it.

And just a thought, you probably already know this but just in case,
20 is what they were set at the factory.
As things wear, adjustments need to be made.
Setting with a timing light, my 149 is at 15, and the 169 is at 13.
Both start and run great.
