Ok guys I found two prospects for my first cub. A 782 that needs a air cleaner and housing, and a 1650 that assumably runs and needs a battery. Can yall help with this decision?
Here are the links... HI cub cadet 782 garden tractor - $700 http://houston.craigslist.org/grd/5249568932.html And Cub Cadet - $1 http://houston.craigslist.org/grd/5281287629.html Guy didn't give me a price on the 1650 but I didn't directlyask either. What should I offer... I do know it needs a battery and probably doesn't come with a deck... Any help is appreciated. Thanks Matt |

I like both models. Personally, I would lean towards the 782. It will be smoother running than the 1650, and I say that being a Q/L fan. Seems I have heard numerous owners say, that the K341 (16HP) Kohler has a tendency shake more so, than lower HP models.

I'm partial to the 782.
Best case scenario it has the series II Kohler in it. Series I did not have pressurized oil to the rods. Lots of broken rods and ventilated engine cases with that motor. Price seems high to me? I would offer less than $400 for it. |

I wonder how much the 782 has been run without an air cleaner?

I'd go for the 782 but not for $700, that looks more like a 3-400 dollar tractor to me. The only thing the 1650 has going for it is the fact that if the engine even need rebuilt it will be much cheaper than the twin in the 782.

I don't know about the tractors but see if you can score that back blade
Sorry I guess that didn't help you with your question, 782 is first choice

Don't know if you saw this one but it looks nice and has a decent price if the deck is good.

I know this doesn't help answer the original question, but if you were going to ask a crazy amount of money for a 782 in that condition, wouldn't you want to find an air cleaner and install it, so the question of "how much dirt have you thrown down the throat of this thing" doesn't exist?
It's these kinds of things that make me wonder, how much other crap you're gonna find once you get it home.

Since this will be your first Cub Cadet, I would look for something in better shape. Sam Mac makes a good point about the missing air filter. Dirt ingestion does destroy an engine very quickly.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
