Haban sickle mowers
OK gang, got a performance question about sickle mowers under Cadets. First, I'm assuming Haban was the only people to make them, or that they are the most plentiful? Now for the performance part, how well do they work? To define well I'm talking about comparing them with tractor sickle mowers. I've run 3 different ones over the years that are great. I've ran one under a Farmall Cub, a semi-mounted Deere from the 60's or 70's (great machine, just pitman drive) and we currently run a belt drive balanced head IH machine 7 ft blade, semi-mount. The Deere and the balanced head IH will cut through most anything. I'm talking stuff 2-3 foot tall, ditches, road banks, around ponds, dense hay etc. I've cut plenty of hay that was rank enough to where you could feel the side draft in the steering wheel. How will a Haban work in those conditions? Is the angle of the blade pretty much infinite?

I've cut 1" pine trees with my Haban, like a hot knife through warm butter. They cut from 90 degrees up to 45 degrees down.

They will also pull your front end to the right if you get into anything dense.
I've also used mine to cut hedges back, kinda scary having the cutters so close to your face, instinct makes you want to reach up and grab anything that you think is going to hit you in the face. I have to constantly remind myself to keep my hands away from the cutters. They really are good fun to use. As Sam said, they will cut through some pretty big stuff.

I have just finished up the fabrication work of converting a Haban to rear mount. I did test run with it and think it's going to work great.
Don't have any pictures yet but will post them later.

I bought a 1864, it's just grown from there. The Cubs have replaced old Chevys as my hobby/passion. The only car I have left is a '67 Chevelle wagon. Seems like a good trade off. I can put five Cubs where one car sat and there are no titles or license to fool with! Tim

Sounds like these things are pretty tough! Whats the blade length, 4ft?
Dad mentioned it would be nice to have one. We don't use the balanced head IH mower for anything but cutting hay. Years ago when we farmed for a living we would put in an old blade and do maintenance mowing with it or the Deere. I see them sometimes for other makes, wonder how bad the conversion would be? I'll probably never get one, just kind of had the wheels turning a little over the weekend.
