Hello, my trusty Cub Cadet 1320 with 12.5HP Kohler Command engine suddenly doesn't want to start. It was running just fine last week, but for the last two days now it just won't start.
I checked the spark, and it's good and strong. It seems to be getting fuel. It also won't start when given starter fluid. It almost seems like the timing is off. It does puff a little bit but there just doesn't seem to be combustion. When given the ether, it almost seems like it is back firing. I made the mistake of spraying ether in there with the air filter removed and it started a small fire in the air box. I'm just not sure what to check next? Thank you.

Sounds like you may have a stuck valve. Typically, the exhaust valve hangs up since it is the hottest.
That's where I'd start if I didn't have compression. Also, go easy on the starting fluid. A quick shot of raw gas down the spark plug hole, or through the carb is a better way.

Hello. Thank you for the info. I have a compression tester somewhere, I will get that out and see what it reads, if anything. Now that you mention it, it does seem to be whirring over pretty fast, like there isn't a whole lot of load on the engine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
