Had a issue yesterday with my 126 and finally figured out that the lower contact on my V/R was stuck/welded together causing the S/G to run after the key was turned off. Freed it up and sanded the contacts with 400 grit paper.
Got it all hooked back up and ran it just to see if that got it fixed. After running it for a few minutes I'm not getting any charge back to the battery and the V/R was extremely hot to the touch after just those few minutes of running. Maybe it's supposed to be? The contact wasn't welded back together but I assume the V/R is a goner and it's time for a new one.Couple of questions....... 1. Anything I should try before buying a new V/R? 2. Could this be a sign of another electrical issue that I need to correct or did the V/R just give up the ghost? Thanks guys, I appreciate your help with it. |

Buy a new V/R and be done with it. Install the new one correctly and observe the Charging System performance. If something pops up, address it.

And do yourself a favor, pay close attention to the markings on the regulator terminals!
Not all regulators are created equal, just because a terminal is in the same place/location, does not mean it is the same terminal. If you remove say a battery terminal, make sure you replace it on a terminal marked battery or you will fry the new regulator most times. |

I believe I would check the wiring before I installed a new regulator.
The 1X6/7 wire looms were terribly bad about loosing their insulation and then bare wires contacting metal or other bare wires. No sense in needlessly letting the smoke out of a new regulator.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've been researching new V/R and noticed the different terminal placements. Most of the new ones seem to have the Gen terminal behind the V/R.
I will double check the wires too to make sure the smoke stays in the new V/R.

Thanks for head-up Jeff. My father-in-law actually rewired this tractor before he gave it to me. I'll still double check them to make sure they're still in good shape. Not saying it's wired correctly but at least the wires are new. ![]() You're right about Mike's wires though, I ordered a new coil wire from him because the old one that was one it was loose on the plug, and it was top notch. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
