First all, I would like to say hi. I'm a new member. I have been restoring this 104 and have put a new wiring harness, ignition switch, new battery, points and condenser. A when you turn the key on to start it does nothing. We tried jumping the starter and it spins. The harness was bought on eBay for $62.00 and it came with diagram and i hooked it up just like it was suppose to be. I was wondering what I'm doing wrong. I've never had one of these and they are very scarce where I live at. I only know of 3 around here. Any help with this problem will help.

Did you change the starter generator and voltage regulator? Just curious.

I moved this thread to the proper section. You had it in the ZTR section.... but it is an IH built garden tractor.
Get out a test light (or DVOM) and start tracking where you do and don't have power. Here is a link to the wiring diagram for your machine: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35 |

If you have painted the frame and or the engine then you could very well have a no ground situation. You are going to have to check to see if there is power going into and coming out of the ignition switch, if you have painted inside the dash tower then you may not have ground to the starter solenoid. Using the wiring diagram, start at the battery and follow the path of electricity with your test light or meter, where the electricity stops is probably where your problem is. Keep in mind, that the charging system has NOTHING to do with starting the engine. And check the neutral safety switch to make sure it works properly.

If you can hook jumper cables up to the starter and it spins, the starter is good. Save your money, you don't need to replace it.
Why would you do that anyway if you know it works??

What exactly does it do when held to start position? Do you hear a click or no? Did you use an OE 3 prong key switch? What is battery volts during start? Not much in between on this model, start circuit runs through clutch start switch then to solenoid. Solenoid pulls in then sends volts to A terminal on starter gen. Make sure you have wires and cables on correctly per the diagram link provided above

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
