Default My first Hydro Cub Cadet, a model 149 (needs help)

Got it yesterday from a guy in Massachusetts (pics to follow soon ), apparently it was his dad's "spare" 149 which he borrowed parts from on occasion. On this occasion he didn't replace the borrowed part which happens to be the drive-shaft and plastic cooling fan. Before I start parts hunting, I thought that it might be a good idea to find out if any other model Cubs might use the same drive-shaft to expand the possible source for donor parts. Anyone? Thank you, Paul

Any driveshaft from the 1X9 series is the same.

What J-mech said. Also, check the drive hub. The drive hub gets wallered out and can cause it to keep snapping the roll pin in the drive shaft. If you do them both now it will last a long time.

Default If I understand you correctly.....

the only two other driveshafts that will fit will be from a 109 or a 129 series as a 169 is nearly unobtainium, correct? Thank you, Paul

No, they are all 3 exactly the same. 169 is no different from the others. 109, 129, 149, or a 169 will all fit, as I stated:

Jonathan.....I think Paul meant that no one parts out a 169, so it is next to impossible to get a drive shaft from a 169. Well, some people part them out, but not very many.

Default Got a driveshaft, need the fan

Greetings- Got a drive-shaft from a 149 from an extremely helpful guy named Bob Hurley from Wellsville, New York. I located a couple of places to get the driveshaft Hydro cooling fan, but they want as much to ship the fan as what the fan costs (about $10.00- for a total of $20.00).So I started thinking, there must be a "generic" fan out there that would fit, perhaps even made out of something stronger than plastic (steel or aluminum?) . I'm guessing that someone has already run into this same dilemma and has found an off the shelf solution for a much better price. I ask the question, do you know of a fan , plastic or metal, that will bolt onto the 149 driveshaft and do the same if not better job than the
$20.00 plastic fan? Thanks for your help, Paul

contact your local Cub dealer. Fans are still available from Cub Cadet, P/N IH-547749-R2.

Can likely save on shipping, and they may have one in stock.

No. Just get what's supposed to be there and be done with it. By the time you try and make something else work you'll be money ahead to get the factory one...
But, your money, your tractor, and your time.

There isn't a fan that will do a "same or better" job for less money. The old one lasted roughly 40 years and you want to know if there is something better? Seriously???

Shell out the $20 and order a fan. In 20 years come back and tell us if it was worth it or not. (That's assuming it lasts half as long as the original.)

Or, sit down, research, hunt through a million websites, dig through junk yards, keep track of your time, test it for 40 years then let us know if Cub did it right or not, and if $20 is too much to pay.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
