Default Kids are great!/Kid size tractor?
The farmers CO-OP where I work had a customer appreciation day,so I took one of my Cub Cadets and a trailer and had a "kids hayride" The kids loved it,,,almost as much as I did.

I have been thinking lately that I would like to build a "kid size" tractor to take to tractor shows,etc. I know it would be fun for me and the kids. But,then there are the safety/liability issues. You know,like a kid running over another kid, a kid falling off and getting run over, a kid getting burned on a hot muffler,etc. That would just spoil all the fun. Maybe I could build an electric kid size tractor or a pedal tractor,the pedal tractor should be the safest.
Any thoughts? Has anyone seen a custom built kid size tractor?

A friend of mine built up a pedal tractor with a different gear ratio and rubber lug tires on the rear. His son rode it everywhere! The rubber tires and ratio change made it much easier for him to pedal. It was really neat! Of course it was an IH pedal tractor.

get one of these and pull the engine and add pedals, it would be any easy project with 3 forward speeds plus reverse.

There is a lot of stuff out there in the electronics world now that you could build a kid's sized tractor, maybe even from a pedal tractor, and have a wireless kill switch or emergency stop in case things go bad.

A small 12v battery, a wheelchair motor hidden in the tractor body, and a few electronic bits and it should work dandy.

Look up "radio controlled tracked robot" and look at how they've been built.

Regardless of how it's done, I feel we need to endorse this endeavor fully.

I was at a plow day this past spring, they had 2 old JD garden tractors setup with pedals like Tim is suggesting. Like the LT in Tim's picture, they were belt driven so an easy convert to pedal power.

Yes,a pedal tractor probably is the best way to go. But it seems the pedals would be very widely spaced for a kid. And the gear ratio would be very slow going through the transaxle.
