Kohler Command CH20 Wiring Guidence Needed
Hi guys. I need some advice. I want to bench run this CH20 before I put it in a 682. I know I will need to adapt a wire harness for this CH20 to work in the 682 (which is where it will be going), but for now just want to bench run the motor. This motor came from a 3000 series Cub but the model is unclear. On the connector I do see that the purple wire runs to the center lug on the regulator, and the blue wire goes to the starter solenoid, but it is unclear how it should be wired for running.
What I need to know is what lug on the connector needs full time 12V, and what lug needs 12V when the key is in the run position. I understand that 12V needs to be applied to the starter solenoid when the key is in the start position, but the rest is unclear to me. The carb solenoid wire does not have continuity to any lug on the connector (I thought I saw in the schematic, a diode in line on that wire?). I have a few ignition switches laying around that I can use for this purpose. Here is a few pics of the connector as well as the model number of the motor if it helps. Download the manual from the Kohler web site. It has wiring diagrams for the engine plus everything else you next to know.

Probably in the cub that this motor was in, had another harness coming to the starter that was a direct connection to the purple wire somewhere in the harness, but I don't know for sure and that is why I am asking. I would assume by looking at the manual, that the purple wire is always hot, but I need to be sure. The manual does not know the application this motor will be in, so I am not going to assume anything, that is the other reason I am asking. Thanks! TB |

This was a tough one, standard Kohler wiring.

Put a battery cable to the copper stud on the starter soliend, then a ground to the engine block. You can put a hot wire to blue/red but do not hold it there for long else you going to replace your starter. The purple/red should power it sent so I don't think you will need to put a hot wire there, but if you need power then just take it from the starter then to that prong.
