I have had two other tractors with a vanguard 16hp engine on them, and a regular cheapo 200CCA lawn and garden battery has been plenty to spin them. When I got my first cyclops 1641, I moved one of my good 200CCA batteries over to it and changed the battery terminals to bolt on style and it barely cranks the engine. Now that I got a 1864 without a battery I need to buy one for it. I didn't really want to spring for $100 for a small car battery for it. Would a 340CCA lawn and garden battery be enough for this? I can get a DieHard Gold 340CCA lawn and garden battery for $50. I'm wondering if that'll be enough, and I wonder why the same battery and same vanguard engine barely cranks in the 1641... is it because of all the other cool stuff like indicator lights, and all that stuff draining off power?

The indicator lights don't have anything to do with it. The starter is not only spinning the engine, it is turning the hydro pump. In colder temps it will put up a lot of resistance. Especially if your neutral adjustment isn't perfect.
My 1864 has a 525 CCA Die-Hard in it the PO installed. 4 years and going strong. A 340 will work if you only plan to use it in the summer. Remember, you get what you pay for. ![]() Edit: check all connections, especially the grounds. PO also replaced/upgraded battery cables.

That is true. I didn't think of the hydro pump. Though one was a craftsman with a hydro but with the brake on the belt was loose and not turning the pump. The other was a gear tractor.
This question is moot now. I found a 575 that will fit at Walmart for $48. That works for me. ![]() |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
