Smile Not a "lawnmower! "

I went to get new gaskets for the sediment bowl on my 125 and the guy had no clue about what I needed. He informed me that most of their stuff was for "big tractors, not lawnmowers." I then corrected him and informed him that I have a 1968 Cub Cadet and that yes, it cuts grass, but it is most definitely not just a lawnmower and that it is indeed a tractor, albeit a small tractor. I then said that my Husqvarna YTH2348 was a lawnmower.

Where was this, a cub dealer or Case IH?
Yeah, a lot of people don't understand there is a difference between a "lawnmower" and a garden tractor...
Glad you set em straight.

My local farm store. They are usually very good, but this guy needed a little schooling.

You gotta remember to a lot of people thesearch are just lawn mowers. To them that's all they are good for and nothing but. They don't understand the difference nor do they want to. I just let them continue to think that their craftsman is a strong machine.... then I take their money when it comes time to repair it a couple times a year

This type of thing just amuses me anymore. I stopped for lunch the other day with my 882 & box blade on the trailer and someone asked me about my riding lawnmower.

I just bought my 125 in February and did a lot of resrarch on these tractors. That was my first Cub. I paid $ 550 for it and it came with 2 sets of rear tires, chains (already installed on the narrower set of tires) wheel weights, plow, 2 42" decks, the deck carriage and the mule drive. I'm waiting on the rebuilt and painted PTO to arrive so I can get the 125 cutting grass.
I'm now looking at adding anothet Cub, a 126. The owner is asking only $300. It comes with a deck too. I'm not sure of the size though. Of course, I'll have to find a creeper for it. I'd like to eventually add hydraulic lifts for them and headlights to at least the 125.
Luckily my Husqvarna lawn tractor hasn't given me any trouble. It is 10 years old and only has 185 hrs on it. All I've done to it in 10 is replace the fuel pump, battery and regular maintenance. I do know it will not last like the Cubs though!

I grew up in a family where the cub cadet was the 'small tractor' and all it did was mow grass...so my family has called it 'the lawn mower' for years and it never offended me. I always though it was funny that others call it something else. I understand WHY, but still....

I think its a regional thing. As far as I am concerned ALL Cadets are lawnmowers, I don't care if tis one of those fiberglass rear engine riders or a diesel powered Super, its a lawnmower. If its green with Bambi on it, it is still a lawnmower. That's just how folks in this region refer to them. The one thing that really irritates me is how many folks on here call them Cubs--they are Cub Cadets, but not Cubs. A Cub is a REAL tractor--although tiny and annoying, they are still a real tractor. In my area, back when Cadet and Deere were king and ZTR's were freaks made by Grasshopper, you either had a GOOD lawnmower (Cadet or Deere) or a piece of (insert you own derogatory comment). I guess one other thing that makes folks here call them lawnmowers, that's all 99.99% of them ever did. Deep in tobacco country we have tons of the offset IH tractors for cultivating. You ever garden with those, you'll never look back. Lets be real you can't compare a IH 140 to any Cadet--its apples vs oranges. About the only thing I see a Cadet do efficiently and neatly that can't be done with a small farm tractor, is run a snow blower/thrower---besides mowing a lawn.

I will admit to using the term tractor on here, generally when speaking of the part of the lawnmower with 4 wheels and engine. Seems a lot of ya'll use implements other than a mowing deck for some reason.

Now I just so happen to have a brochure on my desk for an IH Cub Cadet tractor (original). And at the shop/dad's house we have a full library of Cadet parts books--some labeled Super Garden Tractor. Regardless of what the manufacturer called it once upon a time, they have always been lawn mowers here.

FWIW, IH pulled the tractor dealership away from the dealer dad worked for right after the strike (1970's). They were allowed to keep the parts contract and the Lawn and Garden contract---seems to me IH changed their mind a bit before selling Cadet to CCC/MTD.

Anyway, I didn't get to work on my 782 lawnmower tonight as much as I would like to, I was helping dad service a Super A tractor we use to cut hay with.

At the time I was mowing my 5 acres with a 6' finish mower pulled behind a 9n. Cracked the block so took her outta commission for a complete rebuild. Bought a 682 that was for sale couple miles away, as I needed something to keep after the grass. At some point I must have made reference to it being a lawnmower. The guy responded emphatically and in a huff - That's not a lawnmower, that's a GARDEN TRACTOR! I stood corrected. Lol

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
