Default 682 oil in air filter

Been a long time since I was last here but I have a question for you spread frame guys. I recently bought a IH/CCC 682. The problem I am having is the kt17II is blowing oil into the air cleaner. I took it off in the pics and ran it to see how bad it was, and covered the engine bay in oil. Is there any reason(s) it is doing this and where do I need to check first? Obviously the air cleaner is junk and I am suspecting a blockage at the ccv, but does it go deeper than that? I apologise for the sideways pics. I have a new phone and haven't figured it all out yet. Thanks in advance for your help.

A couple of things can cause it.
A worn out engine like piston rings.
Also on the base of the crankcase vent tube is a valve cover.
In it is either a rubber valve the size of a dime that could be bad, or there is a
"reed" style flapper valve ( older design) and they tend to break off/malfuncton.
this allows crankcase pressure to blow up to the aircleaner.
Note: a small amount of oil in the air cleaner is normal, but not slobbering wet dripping kind of thing.
investigate the vent valve first.
Please download the free service manual available in our tech section if you have not already.
Oh and read the manual

My 2072 was doing the same thing, replaced the reed/umbrella/check valve thing George mentioned, problem solved.

George, I thought the reed was the new style? Anyway you have to buy the little plate assembly or something like that if it hasn't been updated because Kohler doesn't support the old design----going by memory here but I think that was the story when I worked on mine a few years back.

Could be, guess I need to look in the parts tree thingy.

Yes, I agree that it might be that the breather assembly needs replaced. I had to do this in my 682 due to some oil coming into the air filter. Replacing this fixed the problem. My KT-17 had the older umbrella style breather and the umbrella was old and rotten (didn't seal right). I replaced the breather assembly with the newer reed style and it works great. I think it was around 20 bucks.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
