I'm sure this will spark a lively debate. Later in the week I plan to start tinkering with this 784, I would really like to pull the heads to inspect the cylinders before I even try firing it but I want to spend as little money as possible getting it to run to see if it's worth putting money into. My plan is to temporarily reuse the gaskets provided they're still in one piece, I will clean them and use some copper spray. If it runs and isn't a smoking, knocking pile of junk the gaskets will get replaced immediately. Your thoughts?

To further add to the head gaskets debate I will ask if I should use Kohler gaskets or aftermarket? I generally like to use genuine Kohler gaskets but I know for a fact they are graphite with no fire ring, I see some aftermarket gaskets on eBay that have a fire ring and are about half the money. Opinions?

Go ahead nothing to loose, I'd do it for what you are wanting to do.
you've got a 50-50 chance of old ones working in the long run, if they are the fire ring ones. The others usually ruin when you remove them. These work well on several engines I have. Ebay: 271824562906

I've done it multipul times. I got a couple engines that I never got around to putting new one's on that are running fine. But to do in a pinch it'll work fine

If you really want to save money, pull the spark plugs and look in the hole. Roll the engine by hand to satisfy yourself it will roll. Then get it running. Just leave the heads on it. Why do you need to see the cylinders to try and get it running. It's either going to run or not. Pulling the head just to look isn't going to change anything. If your only going at it to look..... it's a waste of time.
