Disconnect the linkage at the brake caliper, and thread the linkage rod in or out of the clevis such that when reconnected, the pads are just lightly touching the brake disc when the brake pedal is all the way up.

Yeah, I'd say so, since those were both standard on the 1914. Someone must have removed them. You basically have a 1912 now.

Dieslelmax....good to have another 1914 owner on here! I have noticed on mine that the brakes on the right side adjust all the way so that the rod hits the brake lever and still no brakes on that side. Looking at the pads, there are a good bit of pad left. Any ideas? I might be trying MattG's pad replacement when i get the rear end off but I dont think it needs it...

I know this isn't a correct fix but I had one side do that so I had cut that rod shorter so it wouldn't hit. I too had pads in great condition. Although, I do have 2 extra rods so I wasn't worried about cutting on one.

For how easy and cheap it is to glue new lining on the pads, I'd reline them and leave everything else as-is.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
