Why I wear safety glasses ( ugly mug warning !!!! )

I was machining some 5" square steel tube at work today and was drilling a 7/16" entrance hole for an endmill using a carbide drill. The drill was spinning at 3000 rpm and being fed at 15" a minute. ( .005 per rev )

It takes less than two seconds for it to drill thru the 3/16" steel thickness.

The chip came off the drill and hit me across the face. I had a coolant mark across my right lense of my safety glasses ( regular glasses in pic ) and got a cut over a 1/4" long on my nose.

Just another "character mark" for me but just shows why proper eyewear is extremely important.

Glad you had your gear on Jeff.
I find it can go bad so fast, but still many times, "just going to grind this corner, or drill this hole" don't need eye protection...
Most times, there's no excuse, cause I have glasses at each workplace, just poor excuses is all.
Had to have a piece of steel removed from my eye, that hurt like hell, just wished I had on some eye protection at the time...

Glad you're going to be alright and that you used the right equipment for safety for the job! We cannot stress that enough in everything we do. Now you will have a good reason to pick your nose as it scabs over. I even wear safety glasses when I mow after having a rock ricochet off of the barn and come back at me, just catching me on the cheek.

I started wearing glasses at age 12, by age 14 I had glasses save my vision because of a flying object.

Over the years, I have been repeatedly asked why I do not get contacts, instead of fighting with glasses,,,

My answer is always the same,, my hobbies are too dangerous,,,

I will get cataract surgery soon, within a 10 years,,
I worry that they will "correct" my vision, so that glasses may not be necessary,,,
