Working on my most recently purchased 149 trying to find a leak around the axle housing where it meets the rear end. Took the back plate off to drain the oil and noticed that the lower right side bolt went all the way through the housing. Is this supposed to be like that? I believe that the fluid was leaking out from that bolt. Bolt was properly tightened.Some one had repainted the back plate and the paint was off color and had bubbles in the paint. Would it be possible for the fluid to leak out around the bolt head? I at first thought the axle flange gasket was leaking. Looks like a really tight fit between the frame and axle flange. Be hard to get a gasket in between. Would like to hear from you guys and gals that have been there done that. Thanks for looking and have a great day.

The lower right side bolt should be a 3/8-16 X 2 1/4.
The upper 2 bolts are 3/8-16 X 2 1/2. These bolts hold the rear end in your 149 as well as the axle housing. Information was found in the Cub Cadet parts finder : https://www.cubcadet.com/webapp/wcs/...101&langId=-1# The rear end will need to be removed to change the axle housing gasket. You may be able to lift frame above axle housing....for me it is easier to remove the rear end. The axle will need to be removed. Axle can be removed by removing the c-clip in the differential. If the oil leak is coming thru the bolt hole and your 149 has the correct bolt you could try thread sealer on the bolt. Make sure the threads are clean before using thread sealer. I never tried that....not sure how well it will work.

If this is the bolt that is dripping oil it will need sealed. Spray the hole with some brake cleaner, blow clean with compressed air, use Permatex #2 and torque to 30ft/lbs.

Oak, That is the bolt in question. Will try what you suggested and hope that cures the leak. I still do not understand why that bolt hole was drilled and threaded all the way through. Thanks to all that responded for the help. Have a great day.

I understand your frustration with the leak. The most obvious reason to drill and tap through is that it is harder to tap a blind hole.

As a machinist, it's stronger to drill and tap the entire way thru then use a sealant. Yes you could drill and tap a blind hole but then you can run into other problems later if a longer bolt is used and breaks the casting.
