Default Tinkering got the best of me

I got my cub up and running after a new carb. In fact it ran remarkably well but was puffing just a little smoke. Thought maybe carb needed a little tweaking and poof. It wouldn't run at all. I did happen to leave the ethanol fuel in the carb, instead of running it dry, but for only a few days. Carb is brand new and had about an hour of service before it started leaking. Took apart and cleaned jets put back together and now it will only run at half choke or full choke.

I want to confirm a few things on the governor too. Loosen bolt grab pin and turn full counterclockwise with throttle all the way up. Make sure the valve in carb is also open all the way and then tighten screw back down on gov shaft. Then adjust the throttle linkage so that it will connect up to throttle shaft and done? It did tension the spring a bit once I connect the throttle linkage to the throttle shaft but I suppose that's normal and would have nothing to do with my choke issue. I suspect it's still junk in carb/jets maybe? I've taken main jet out twice and sprayed with Brake Kleen and the compressed air.

I know these things are finicky. Hope I can get it straight soon. I am going to get some new tires I want to try out pretty soon!

I can understand that one can have a Carb issue and/or bad gas. I am trying to figure out how this morphed into a Governor issue.

None the less, the Governor adjustment procedure is located in the Kohler K Series Service Manual, as found here. See link: Service Manual

Once you get the Governor adjusted to Kohler's procedure, then refocus on the Carb. The fact that you made the above statement indicates not enough Fuel Delivery.

Need more details than " poof" whats it doing now? Have you cleaned tank and fuel lines? New fuel filter? Are you still getting spark? Etc

No. The governor to throttle linkage should remain connected throughout the adjustment procedure.

Although that linkage is adjustable it should not require any. Try to get it back the way it was and then repeat the governor reset procedure.

Ethanol fuel isn't a huge deal as long as you don't leave it set for too long, and 3 days is definitely not too long.

What does "poof" mean? Just sputtered and stopped?

I've also seen those ebay china carbs leak from time to time. Seems to be a fairly common problem with them.

TruFuel and BG are both brands often sold in cans at your local hardware store. I run it in all the stuff I don't use often, and it's saved me a lot of headaches. (Use it in your weed eater the last now of the year, come spring it will start like normal). It's expensive but worth it IMHO.

Me thinks you had crap get into carburetor coincidentally as you was fooling around with it. Small tweaks usually don't make a poof. As it was said before, clean fuel, tank and filter is what I believe you need to accomplish.

Are you sure your new carb was clean inside before you installed it? There could be a good chance there was a piece of dirt in the carb. China dudes couldn't care how clean their area is when they assemble stuff. The vibrations from the engine could have loosen the carb parts.

E10 gas is a good product if you store and handle it the right way. Ethanol will act like a cleaner and loosen any dirt in the carb. Several gents in my area tried the local nonethanol fuel. Some had good luck at first. Several start having problems 3 months after trying the nonethanol fuel. One ask the fuel station when was the last time bulk tank was filled. Turn out to be 4-5 months ago.

I reset the governor every time I install a different carb than what was used on the engine. Some carbs have different lengths throttle arms.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
