Default New to me 982

I pickup the one I had been looking for for a long time, an IH built 982, complete with dual brakes, 3 point, front outlets and rear PTO. PO had painted it, more like a preservation than a restoration. I got it mostly put back together this afternoon, I don't think the fenders are right though, I had to put spacers under them, and they are still very close to the tires. Still have to finish wiring things up, has the wrong key switch. Also came with a 60" haban deck and a 54" power angle blade. I'm surprised my better half hasn't made me sleep in the garage with it..

I picked it up two weeks ago tomorrow, its been a challenge putting it together when I wasn't the one taking it apart. The side panels need some adjusting to fit correctly. Have to figure out how the grill mounts as well. Needs new rag joints, new seal and bearing on one axle.

Nice job Frank on an IH 982 with lots of extras! Wish mine had the rear PTO and 3 point on it, or heck, I'd like to just get a Haban deck. I recently got a 54" power angle Haban blade for mine, but haven't hooked it up yet. Are your rear tires filled? I was thinking you will want as much weight on the back as you can if you install the blade on the front.

Congratulations on your 982.

The fenders look correct, but the tires look oversized from 26x12.00-12 OEM tires.

Tires are not filled, yet. I never realized a front blade or a mowing deck for a garden tractor would be so heavy. I'll check the tire size this evening, they do look a little like balloon tires. When pulling the rear axle to change the seal, do I have to pull the c-clip from the top, or is it exposed from the rear cover as well?

pretty piece of equipment,, looks like the hood and grill are to far to the rear by about an inch or so or the sides are to far forward.

I loosened the grill and moved it as far forward as I could, it still doesn't line up just yet. I have a bigger problem though, the left rear axle was leaking so I ordered a new needle bearing and seal for it. I got it apart this afternoon and I have a brass bushing(I think), instead of a bearing. I put the new seal in, got it all back together, and it is still dripping. I guess I need to check for maybe a cracked housing?

Nice looking 9.

I wonder if the axle tube is wallered out and someone tried to install a bushing. It might be easier just to replace the tube.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
