Default 1863 pto

I was hauling some limbs out of the yard this morning and noticed the pulley on the deck creeping a little. I turned it off and looked around but didn't see anything wrong. I cranked it back up and about 30 seconds the blades came on, I thought it might be the switch but when I unplugged the PTO it still turned when the engine was running. I pulled it down to the garage door to pull it off and finish my hauling. I discovered it's a little more than taking out a bolt and slipping the PTO off the anti rotation pin. I'll have to get it in the garage and see what all has to come off to remove it. After checking the price of a new one on Partstree I may try to save this one. Looks like the later serial numbers have a anti rotation pin instead of the mounting plate.

Yep you probably have the one that requires you to remove the muffler to remove it. If the bearing has not totally failed I would re-grease it. Just get a needle adapter at your local auto parts store, insert it between the inner bearing race and the seal lip and pump some fresh grease into the bearing. This is a how to on youtube.

I've done a few bearings this way like the idler pulleys and PTO's use a good quality grease.

After removing the deck, hood, 2 heat shields and the muffler this is where I'm at. After getting the mounting plate free I couldn't get any movement. I removed the adjusting nuts thinking it might be easier to remove it in 2 pieces. I snugged the puller up on the pulley, squirted PB Blaster in the key way and tapped on the puller with a hammer. so far the PTO has not moved that I can tell. I removed the grease seal to get a look at the bearing, it appears to be turning some. Maybe it freed up when it cooled off. I'm considering packing the bearing with #2 grease, installing the seal and putting it back together and hoping for the best. I have some wheel bearing grease if that would be better. Advise?
Sam, I'm thinking now you may have meant to grease it in place.

I meant for you to grease the bearing with the seal in place. That's why I posted the link with the how to. You may be able to grease what you have and put the seal back in place but honestly I think at this point I'd remove it and replace the PTO with a new Xtreme PTO and be done with it.

I have one of those needles that I use on idler pulleys when I can't remove the seal to pack the bearing. This afternoon I put it all back together, installed the deck, packed the bearing and put the seal back in. I did have more trouble than usual getting the seal to go back in, if it flies off while I'm mowing I'll wish I had used the needle. I adjusted the air gap to .020, I have a manual but didn't find the spec. While I was installing the deck belt I was able to turn the pulley by hand and when I cranked it up everything seemed to be working OK. This may not be the final solution but maybe it will get me through the rest of the summer. If the seal fails I'll report back. Thanks

Can't you just put a new bearing in for $5 and be done with it? That is if you can get it off the engine. I have not worked on that style yet so that is why I'm asking.

Replaced the PTO on my 1863 a year ago with one from Xtreme, highly recommend them. Mine was extremely difficult to get off. I actually took emery cloth to the shaft prior to moving it at all to help once it did begin to move. Lots of penetrating oil, emery cloth and prying. Once off, cleaned the entire shaft with emery cloth and used anti-seize when installing the new one. Been working great since.

Oak; That was my intention when I started trying to take it off. I never got it to move on the shaft and decided not to keep going and destroy it.

That looks like the conversion kit. Pulley looks too small in the pic so I would call them to confirm that it has the 6" pulley like you have on your existing PTO. Or you could order the PTO for the late 1863 from Xtreme and the spacer and anti rotation stud from Cub. Probably the same price once the shipping is included.
