Default 1872 Driveshaft issue

Hello All! My brother has a 1872 that he bought new. Finally he had to do some work on it other than normal maintenance. He pulled the engine to replace a leaking rear seal and when he reinstalled the engine and started it, it ran around ten minutes and started vibrating badly due to both carriage bolts snapping in the coupler on the flywheel. Thought maybe he didnt have them tight enough, got a new coupler and made sure everything was tight and same thing after running around ten minutes. He lives over three hours from me so I cant actually see what it going on. Head said the driveshaft isn't bent. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill Peden.

Something is bent or broke. Can you post some pictures of the shaft and the flex disks?

I would think something must be misaligned for that to happen to a new coupler. Did the flex coupler line up pretty easily or was it tough to get bolts aligned? Check the engine mounts. See if the are loose or damaged. When you install it again I would turn by hand and check with a run out gauge before running

My bet is that he got #10 and #13 installed 90 degrees off.

Had not thought of that. But yeah. That would certainly do it. You mean like bolted solid together, Right?

I agree with Sam. Get him to send a picture next time he gets it back together. The front and back.

Yep, I was 1/2 asleep when I posted that. 90 degrees it is. Went back and corrected it.

I will post pictures of the whole assembly when he gets it back together. I told him maybe leave tunnel cover and side cover off and watch and see what is going on. Probably won't be till next weekend though. Thanks to everyone for all the help. One note, I ask him if he put grease on the end of the axle and on the coupler and he said no. I always put grease on mine and just wondering if that may have any effect putting it together dry.
