I have a cc gt 2544 . When going in reverse and taking foot off the reverse pedal, it wants to throw you over the seat. When going forward and taking your foot off the forward pedal, it slows down very slow. Question is, is this caused by the damper cylinder? What should the damper cylinder feel like when pushing/pulling on cylinder when holding in your hand. Just replaced this damper cylinder with a new one, which feels exactly like the old one(very hard to push together, pulls out very easily). I would think there should be some resistance in each direction, like a shock absorber works. Tia

could it possibly be hooked up backwards?
are their 2 cushions like on twin hydro's?

Hooks up either way, doesn't matter. No, just one cylinder.

I disagree, or at least my experience with these dampers is that the centering point is not mid way. In other words pulls out more than pushes in ( or vice-a-versa). See the compressions in the cylinder walls in the picture. And since your hydro linkage moves more in the forward direction than reverse, the damper must be in correctly.
I believe there are only springs inside, not gas or oil. The resistance it gives, by hand, is pretty much equal in both directions and noticeable but not substantial. Return to center from extension (or compression) does not snap back, dampened but not real slow either.. |

there is only resistance when compressing, and when you release one end, it stays where you release it. when you extend it, there is absolutely no resistance, just pulls right out

Then perhaps I am comparing an apple to an orange. Does yours look like the one in the picture in my post?

as far as? It only has 1 crimped area. As far as action, it only has damping action in one direction. Other direction, it's like internal valving is not functioning. It definitely doesn't have springs. The way it is now, it basically only dampens in one direction.

Well, since you got a new one, and the new one acts like the old one, then it must be correct. My next guess would be that you linkages are out of adjustment. Here is a link to the manual for a GT 2554 (same thing). On page 22 it gives you the procedure for adjustments if you want to try that route.

thanks, ironman. just got home from cub dealer (yes, dealer, not home depot,etc ). they confirmed both old and new cylinders are good. don't understand it, had same problem 10 or so years ago, replaced cylinder, fixed problem. unfortunately, there is absolutely no documentation for this series gt-25xx. don't know why. wondering, anyone out there know if any other series machine uses the same transmission????????????? that owners manual doesn't really tell you to much helpfull info. again, thanks ironman

I believe Ironman might be on the right track there. I had a similar situation with my 2185 which has a similar looking setup to the one in the diagram that Ironman linked. I was first thinking about replacing the damper but decided to try adjusting the linkage as described starting on page 15 of the manual. It took me a couple attempts to get it all adjusted up but I did eventually get it to stop stopping so violently in reverse and not running on in forward. The only way I could get it to stop going forward was to actually give the reverse peddle a tap or two. I suggest you give that adjustment a try. Let us know if that helps.
