Question 102 wont move in gear

New cub cadet owner ...

I have a 102 appears to be all original no creeper. Was working fine driving around the yard hauling firewood. Drove up the sloped curb from the road to lawn and it just stopped moving partly up the incline.

The tractor shifts fine into all four gears and when in neutral it rolls with no issues. The drive shaft is struggling to spin. It spins a little but not consistently when in neutral and does not spin when in gear.

Not sure if I should be looking at the transmission or the clutch.

Thanks.

First, welcome to OCC..........

Your problem sounds like one of the "spirol pins" in the Drive Shaft has broken. I would look at those ----- first.

To get to that I need to remove the fenders and take off the top of the transmission ?

if the drive shaft is not spinning with it in gear it has to be a pin at the front by the engine. or the clutch is not gripping

Looks like the spirol in is missing from the front disc at the clutch. Just received my replacement part. Any tricks/tips on how to put it in?

Did you get a true "spirol pin"?
or a hardware store split pin.
If the latter, it will get you going but probably won't last very long.
Use a pin punch to install it after lining up the slot in the drive plate with hole in the driveshaft.
If the pin slides right through the shaft and falls back out, it's time for a new driveshaft. you could use a small hose clamp to hold it in place or a piece of wire through it and tied but, again, won't stand the test of time and use.
Good luck!

Use of some heat would certainly help, too! Make sure the old pin is completely out and not just sheared off in the old hole. More than likely, it is sheared off. If you don't want to put heat to it, then you can use PB Blaster on it. Soak it in PB Blaster for a day or so before doing work on it. Do NOT use PB Blaster AND heat, as it is flammable! Wear protective eyewear or a face shield.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
