Default Restoration tips

I am restoring a 147 with hydrostatic drive. I want to change the filter and fluid in the drive and the fluid in the rear axle. The manual I bought does not address either task.
How do I change the fluids in each? I bought the filter for the drive unit.

There is 1 area you will have to drain for the filter and rear end-sump.

To change the fluid in the rear you have to remove the rear end cover and leave the oil drain out. I like to use brake clean spray to clean out the rear end. You will need a new gasket.

Also buy a gasket for the rear cover. I drain mine by removing the rear cover. Have a big pan under it, or it will make a mess. After the cover is off, I take clean rags and wipe out any remaining oil and an clean everything I can get to. Keep the inside of the hydro unit as clean as you can.

Put the cover back on with the new gasket, Opinions vary as to whether to use gasket sealer, I do, some don't. The longer bolts go in the bottom where the towing hitch is. I rub just a bit of Hy-Tran on the filter threads and gasket just like any oil filter when I put the new one on. Fill it back up with about 7 quarts of Hy-Tran, through the hole in the rear cover. It can be tricky, I have a long flexible funnel that just fits inside that hole. Some screw in a pipe nipple with el on it to fill. You'll have to figure out what works best for you.

I'm sure somebody will come along and tell me I'm all wrong, but I've been doing it that way for a long time and it works.

Yes, the hydro drive and rear diff use the same fluid, it's all one system, and the differential casing acts as the fluid reservoir. Also it's worth mentioning that you don't need to use the name brand Cub Cadet fluid, as there are companies making cheaper off-brand fluid of the same quality. I'm running a Runnings Harvest King brand hydro fluid in my 107, and there's no issues. Tractor supply brand should also do. On the labels for the containers usually there's a list of the types of fluid it meets standards of, and if Hy-Tran is on that list you should be good to go.

Thanks 'Cub Cadet 107'. I was pretty sure the two were connected given they need 7 gts. I bought AW-32 hydraulic oil by 'Coastal' from my local hardware store. The owner said this oil was compatible with Hy-Tran.
I think I'll research it more before I use it.

I agree, if you're gonna buy a filter you should get the one avaliable from Cub Cadet. Go to your nearest dealer and tell them you need a hydro filter for a 147 (or do it online if there's no dealer near you.) It's most likely a lot better for your machine and will do a much better job as a filter.

A restoration? Best advice I can give is take tons of pics showing when you remove stuff.

Bag and label all small parts and hardware


The rear fluid? Pop the rear cover off
