Default 1872 steering problem

need help - driving my 1872, oil started pouring out from underneath the steering wheel. After researching it is clearly is coming from the column. Power steering works fine, hydro is working.

Any help is appreciated.

The column can be rebuilt. The parts ain't cheap and I've been told by several parties that the results aren't guaranteed. You also need a detailed instruction document to do the job. It's part of the service manual. I just bought a good used column for mine when it acted up. You don't even want to know the price of a new one.
Try one of the site sponsors they may be able to help you with a column. If not we can point you to other sources.

I just had your same problem and rebuilt my steering column on my 1872. I have about 3 hours of use on it and no problems so far. Couple of main things to remember. You need a clean area, be very organized and take your time! Absolutely get the rebuild manual which you download. I even downloaded the OEM maker version (Parker) as well. The manuals are very similar with some minor differences.

I paid $70 for a kit from John Deere. The kit was AM107078. From what I've been told from people who know, Cub Cadet, JD (430, 332, 318) and Simplicity Sunstar interchange. Not an expert, so don't take my word on it, but something to think about to save some $$$$.

The worst part of mine was extracting the steering wheel which I ended up replacing from Steiner.

That's great info! when I priced the rebuild stuff from cub it was almost as high as a used one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
