Is there any way to test the fuel pump on a kt17? I know I'm getting some fuel, but I don't think I'm getting enough.

I've a had a couple that would pump fuel out of the tank, but still didn't work. If you have a vacuum gauge/fuel pump tester, you can put that on the outlet hose of the pump and then crank the engine. It should pump up to 2-2.5 psi and hold it. If it can't hold it, or if the needle just flops around, one or both of the check valves is leaky and it probably can't supply the proper amount of fuel.

Thanks!
My 682 has been running perfectly fine since I got it last year, then while mowing the other day, it started acting up. The engine will only run with the throttle at the very lowest speed or with the choke on. I'm either not getting enough fuel or too much air. I checked for an intake leak but didn't find anything there. If I temp bypass the fuel pump for testing, will the engine run with gravity feeding the fuel to the carb? |

Yes, it will if you get the fuel level above the carb. What you are describing though is textbook fuel pump failure.

I'm thinking the pump as well, I just don't want to throw out $50 for a pump if thats not what it is.
I pulled the hose of the outlet side of the pump and rolled the engine over and very little fuel came out....just barley squirted out. I think more came out just from the gravity when I pulled the line off without the engine rolling over. However, I bypassed the pump and had the same results so I started second guessing. Also, with the engine running and the pump bypassed, I did not notice any suction or pressure from either side of the pump. Once again I am thinking the pump, but the problem is I don't know how they are supposed to function when working properly. |

You can't really just bypass the pump because part of the fuel tank is below the carb, so it may or may not work without it. If you rigged up a tank above the carb, that would tell you for sure. The only other thing I have experienced that causes those same symptoms is a clogged atmospheric vent in the carb, but I only had that happen because I used the wrong carb elbow and it blocked the vent.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
