Default CC 2165 Transmission Question

Have a 1985'ish 2165 that makes a slight ratchet sound, from right rear. The sound is made only in right turns. Was planning on changing transmission filter & oil, but wanted to see if this sound may be indicator of something going south..

Let me know if anyone has idea on what sound is about and/or recommended options to determine if there is an issue

Looking to use Amsoil 20/50 Hy-Tran oil or another quality product if have suggestion.

Thanks

The 2165 was produced '94-'99.

Per the owners manual: Use Cub Cadet "Drive System Oil" part number 737-3055 or a 20W50 oil that meets API service class SG/CD, which is an antiquated SG from when the tractor was new. The special drive system oil's part number is now currently 737-3120. It is very expensive at $17 a quart!

Do not use Hy-Tran. You don't want the moisture clumping up in the rear with no way to get it out. I wouldn't pay $17/quart for snake oil either. This stuff will work fine and is priced fair.

Thanks for responding. Yes, the Amsoil meets the specified criteria for transmission oil. Just would like to figure the noise out before going through oil change.

Forgot to ask if anyone knows how to determine the mftr of a transmission? Believe the one that I have is a Hydro-Gear, but cannot find any identifying marks.

I'm not sure about who made the trans.
I am sure the tractor supply oil works just fine. You can even pick it up in 2 gallon jugs for around $20.

Yes, it is a Hydro-Gear BDU-10L-XXX.

Go here and find which version of the BDU-10L you have. Click the Cub Cadet logo and enter your model/serial numbers

You can go here and get the manual if you don't already have it.

Thank you for the information. Found HG label on transmission, but the manual for the BDU model is just a spec sheet & no other info. Nonetheless, will look into the TSC oil, sounds like a plan.Tks

Sorry about that, I didn't check the link. Here is the service manual and it shows which oils are approved.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
