2082 Magnum Engine Crank Gear Spinning
I finally picked up 2082 Cub Cadet from friend. I opened valve spring covers and no movement of valves. Then I opened oil fill tube, removed angle fill adapter and looked inside, cam gear isnt moving. I'm going to use my camera for closer look. If I suspect that crank gear is spinning, then what? New crank? Or back yard fix of fastening gear to crank? Oil is not dirty no noticable shiny or metal fragments.

Hi SDBOB, You have a major engine snafu! Camshaft does not turn when crank is well...cranked....not good. Better remove engine and split it to inspect and decide what is the best course of action.

Since the crankshaft gear is part of the crankshaft, AND the camshaft gear is part of the camshaft Sum- ting-wong in china. My money is on "its done blowed up" like they say in NASCAR. Are we are talking about a double breasted Magnum opposed twin here? If so, sounds like a rod broke and destroyed the block and broke the camshaft. i'm betting you have one or both pistons not moving either when the crank is rotating. Now I could be wrong as Yall here have caught me a time or two. But take The ladys advice and open it up for a good look see. This ain't a J.B. weld, duct tape Band-Aid fix. would be my take. |

Both pistons are moving with no noticable resistance actually I hear compression with spark plugs loose. So until I split the case. I'm going to use my camera to look inside closely. I'm thinking if I need to split case I may get estimate from my Cub dealer John Labuda(we race Pontiacs). So far doesnt seem blown up just loose gear. Now to use the camera in next couple of days. Thanks guys.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
