Default GTX2154LE 23hp Kohler Command replace with 18hp Kohler Command?

Hi folks, been awhile. Bought a GTX2154LE with an overrevving engine( pretty sure governor gear went bye bye). I did get engine off chassis, ordered some headgaskets, seals, and governor gear. It's a Kohler Command 23hp, just under 600 hours. Going to look at a 18hp Command engine, not sure of year,450hrs or so, but PTO shaft is same size as mine. Gentleman that has it says I can take governor spring off mine and put it on the 18hp to get more hp, not sure, is that true? I don't know how long the 23hp engine was run like that. Just wondering if the 18hp motor will have enough beans to run the tractor and deck( tractor has the electric power steering and deck lift,54" deck)

That's a pretty substantial downgrade in HP and you have a triple blade 54" deck. I'm going to advise you don't do it especially given the fact you have an electric PTO which requires a lot of initial hp to engage the blades unlike a manual pto where you can slowly ease the blade engagement which is less stress on your engine. Check to see if in fact the 23 and the 18hp are the same engine size , i'm betting not. Is the 18hp a twin ? I had a 17.5 Briggs Intek on a 42" Craftsman twin blade deck and it was barely adequate especially if the grass was wet.

The engine blocks are the same it is only the bore and stroke that changes , when I find my brochure I will post further info

OK found the brochure , the bore and stroke are exactly the same for the 18hp and the 22/23hp engines , it is only the 25 that has the bigger bore and stroke
Hope that helps

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
