Default New Guy - Southeast Ohio

Good morning,
My name is Dave (webrx123) and I appear to be addicted to cub cadet GTs and Mowers.

When I moved back to Ohio my new house had an old Craftsman mower that the PO had used to mow the property (approximately 2 acres of mowing). I used this for a bit, got a blade for it, and a back blade for leveling the gravel drive. After welding the deck, replacing blades, and eventually all the pulleys and spindles, I decided I needed something a little newer that I did not have to fix every time I wanted to mow the property, so I bought a new XT1 which works great and was promptly adopted by my better half to do the upper part of the property while I am still running the craftsman on the lower area.

I decided I needed something a little beefier than an old craftsman LT to plow my circular drive, approximately 200 feet, and to allow for adding an in ground garden. So I went in search of a Garden Tractor, and found a 680 Hydro with a really nice deck that had a "compression problem". This ended up needing a new head (had a hole in it) and now it runs great and I can use it to mow the lower half of the property.

I also found a 122 with a blade on it that ran, so picked it up also for a fair price and used it this winter to plow the drive.

Somewhere along the line, I also ran into a cub cadet 108 with a nice deck, that needed some TLC, got it running, and when I lifted it to replace the fuel line, found it was missing some drive belt brackets and pulleys, so, it is in my tractor shed waiting for an opportunity (weather) to finish up.

Not one to leave good enough alone, I decided the 122 which was working perfectly fine, needed a new ignition switch since the key kept falling out, so I purchased one off ISaveTractors for the 122. Installed and went to start the 122 and it would not start, fuse blown, hmm, rechecked the wiring, wired correctly, so started tracing where the wires go and what went awry.

Turns out, the 122, had been repowered with a Tecumseh motor with SSI, and as you all probably know, sending power to the SSI from the "Coil" lead on the ignition switch will fry the SSI coil instantly (Tecumseh needs a ground on the Ignition Switch, not Power like the coil lead is on a old Kohler) and everyone seems to want $300 for a new SSI coil for a Tecumseh. So, off I went in search of a more correct motor for the 122. There are workarounds for this, and I may try the speed sensor electronic ignition one at some point.

Found a Kohler 14hp 321 and a Kohler 12hp 301s nearby and picked them up. The 321 is running, and sitting in a Partially stripped Wheel horse GT14 frame. The 12 was pulled, and in unknown condition, but, it does turn over and feels like it has compression.

The 12HP is going to need to be tested and fixed, and an adapter which bolts to the flywheel to be able to connect the clutch. The 14hp in the WH I have the adapter plate for and it is in good running condition. So for now, I think I am pulling the 14 out of the WH and putting it in the 122, and will work the 12 as I have more time and stick it in the WH if I decide to restore it.

So that is where we are today. I found this site while looking for info on various tasks I was doing on these cubs, and wanted to join and benefit from the obvious experience of the members here.

That's my story and I am sticking to it

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
