Default Tiller pto belt guide

I'm currently putting my tiller back together after powdercoating, got the gearbox on the back and waiting on the rattle can paint on the front hanger parts to cure.
question about the belt "guide" or whatever you call it the hangs off the transmission that I guess are to dampen down the belt flopping upward, Is that strictly necessary? That didn't come with mine, neither did the tiller belt shield. Is the shield just a safety feature or does it keep dirt from being thrown up into the pulleys and being ground into the belt?

I don't have the tiller Belt shield either. You can get the Mid belt Guide On ebay or any of the Bone Yards above that support this forum

Ok so I had, and long lost, the shield from the right angle drive to the tiller belt. I have not seen the shield for about 15 years. I have never had any issue. advice: dont stick your fingers in the operating equipment.
I am completely unaware of the hang off the transmission anti belt floppy thing you guys mention. I have one pully on the motor, two to change directions to send the belt under the tractor and the one on the right angle drive in the rear. I dont have any other pulleys and my belt does not flop around. it has had the same drive belt for at least 25 years and I use the tiller every year. the secondary belt broke last year but I had never bought one of those either. I have had this tiller since mid 90's and I used it every year with this same configuration.
I am running this on a 106 with a danco front end loader

Ok, good to know. I'll try to run it without the guide and see how its runs.

My present problem is finding a belt that fits. I checked the chart in the resources section and ordered the 53 inch belt and a 1/2 x 146 belt and that was the wrong size (I've been using 1/2 inch belts on all my decks and they work well for me and NAPA can order them easily). The ratchet pulley was pulled in past the locking notch and the adjustable one was almost at the end of the screw. will a 7/16 x 146 belt sitting down farther in the pulleys make up that much length? or do I need to get the next longer belt on the charts and see if that fits? worried my McGyvered solution is causing the problem
front hanger from a 44A mule drive with the pully hangers straightened
Rear 90 degree transmission- unknown model, are they all the same between no.1 and No. 2 tillers?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
