Default steering upgrade bearing

I read some threads on here about the steering upgrade that a guy can do to a cub cadet to make the steering easier, I have seen them on ebay, you get a bearing, a steel shim and a locknut for $35.00, some of you posted saying you bought a NICE 605 bearing for 2-3 dollars. I have tried NAPA auto parts, hardware stores and other auto part stores in my area, no one can find a NICE 605 bearing, my question: What is it?? Is NICE the manufacturer of the bearing? Everyone is looking at me like I'm crazy, they say such a bearing doesn't exsist, I know they do cause everyone is selling the kit and getting rich!!! Any more numbers or names on the bearings that you could give me would help. Or would any thrust bearing with a 5/8 hole in the middle work? I would like to be able to buy it at a store close to me cause a $10.00 shipping charge on a $3.00 bearing is out of the question. I have even checked Grainger and McMaster Carr and they don't have it or maybe they do but it doesn't come up when I put NICE 605 in their search. Sorry to be so stupid but I need more info. Thanks

Nice is the manufacturer. Do you have a Motion Industries retailer near you? That's where I get all of mine. Check their website; they have a store locator.

You are correct, auto parts store people will look at you like you're crazy.

Your local bearing supplier should be able to fix you up. Bearing Headquarters is the name of our local bearing house.

I got the NICE bearing from our local bearing distributor, but they had to order it. I ordered the thrust washers from the local Grainger store. I told them both to just put it on the next order as I was in no hurry. I think total was less than $6. Only problem was the washers were back ordered and I had to wait about 6 weeks. Tractor has been apart all summer so the 6 weeks wasn't a big deal.

On a side note I was lloking at rebuild kits on ebay and noticed a guy selling rebuilt colums he put 3 turn worm gears in them to ease steering. I know deere used 3 turn worms in there 300 series but the shafts are shorter. Does anyone happen to know what had 3 turn worm and was same length as cadet?

I think CCC used them between '85 and '89. 1806/1810/1811/1812 etc should have them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
