Default New model 86 owner, a couple questions

Hi,

I just bought this one:

Here is the engine:

Does that muffler look correct to you all? It seems loud, but it may just be my memory of the quiet line I had in the past.

I have a nice zero turn (walker, also yellow) to mow with so I will use this for snow work (looking for a blade) and maybe some gardening (looking for a sleeve hitch).

The tires look original and all but one holds air but I would like to go with tri ribs and lugs in the back. Are most of you using tubes with these narrow tires?

Also, I don't have headlights. The filler panel is in great shape, am I screwing up something valuable by cutting it for lights? Should I just look for a full light panel?

Thanks,

The muffler is the correct type but the pics in my Kenneth Updike book show the muffler just like that but the exhaust came out of a down pipe located at about 8 o'clock if looking at the muffler straight on. I would not cut the header panel for lights, I would find one off of a 128,129, 149 etc. to do your light mod with. That way you can change it back if desired. I like the sound of tri ribs and ags on the 86. That is what I have intentions of putting on all of mine. Oh, very very nice looking 86 btw.

Very clean looking 86. I'm in concurrence with dx3 as far as your muffler. That is the correct size, style, and location to be used on the K181 8hp Kohler engine. It looks pretty solid, but may be broken up internally from age and moisture, A replacement can be found pretty easily either at your local cub dealer or one of the sponsors above. You are correct about the noise compared to a quietline..its going to be naturally louder. I'm with dx3 on the headlight issue too, I would put a wanted ad in the forums classified section, or visit one of our sponsors above. Theres no need to cut the existing panel.

Great looking 86! :biggrin2.gif:

very nice 86! that is my favorite series of tractors as you can see by my signature. i'm almost positive the 86 had its own special muffler but you hardly see any with the original one. mine has the same as yours and i hate the sound of it.

mc25a, nice looking tractor and deck. i just redid one this past summer and it looks almost as good as yours. i agree with the others as well on the muffler. mine has the little extension coming out the side and is fairly quiet. whatever you do will be the best choice because you made it. these tractors are great for tinkering, and they take nearly everything we give them. keep an eye on the drive/clutch area as i have found a simple worn out part can lead to $$$ and down time.

Thanks for the information on the muffler. I don't really need to keep it original but I would like something quieter. One of the big mufflers for a 108 should fit shouldn't it?

You're exactly right there. As I learned the hard way on the 1200 I had. After several clutches and a clutch plate I found that the engine mounts had been installed upside down and were basically worn to nothing. It had a new k301 so I thought that would have been taken care of. Wrong though. Every time I took it apart I found that something else was wrong or backwards on the drive shaft. Once I had it all straightened out it worked great. But I sold it soon after.

That big clutch spring is tough to get on isn't it?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
