I have the crank out and now I see a chunk broken out of the bottom of the cylinder wall. Its about 1/2 inch deep up the side of the wall. So where do I go from here. I see a small nick out of the opposite side of the wall. Photos attached.
Can or will a machine shop rebore the cylinder or is it worth even taking to them? Thanks for the suggestions. Dave |

Yep, Motion Industries or NAPA should be able to cross it to something they have.

This is just a quick question and I am sure you have done this, but you did loosen the lock ring that is behind the bearing??

Dave, The bearing has a lock ring behind it. The ring has an allen head screw with a lock nut on it and a notch in it. Once you loosen the set screw and lock nut, tap the ring counter clockwise (I believe) with a punch in the notch until it's loose and the bearing will come right off with a puller.

Thanks, its a wonder I hadn't beat the crankshaft into trying to get it off.
Never hurts to ask. Dave |

I loosened the collar and it still won't budge. Guess I'll break another puller.

Do you have an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel on it. If so, you can cut the outside race off, get bearings out of the way and cut most of the way thru the inner race. Put chisel in cut line and smack with hammer, hopefully breaking race in two. Should come off easy then.

Dave, Do you have this type of puller? It's made to pull bearings and I also use it to pull CC steering wheels. It's sold by Snap-On so if you break it, the replacement is free.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
